Training and transfer of Knowledge

The network as a whole undertakes to provide a minimum of [352] person-months of Early Stage (252) and Experienced Researchers (100) whose appointment will be financed by the contract. Quantitative progress on this, with reference to the table contained in Part C and in conformance with relevant contractual provisions, will be regularly monitored at the consortium level.

Training Objectives

The training goal of this proposal is to provide a dynamic and interconnected framework for research training and transfer of knowledge to incoming young researchers (ESR and ER). It should serve the personal needs of the trainees as well as the scientific and societal needs of the community. The importance of the goal is expressed in the project planning and management scheme, by bringing the involved activities together in a dedicated work package.

Modern day scientists are expected to operate in interdisciplinary research teams and they are expected to have acquired social and non-scientific intellectual skills in addition to professional know-how. It is the objective of the integrated training and mobility programme to guide young researchers in obtaining these skills, and to provide for the necessary training instruments. GlycoGold will educate broadly oriented researchers in the economically important area at the interface of nanosciences, immunology, chemistry and structural biology. The research aims formulated for this project combine these complementary areas of research. The multidisciplinary skills cannot be acquired at one single institute, region or even country, due to the European spread of specialisations and the necessity to use costly advanced research infrastructures.

The mobility objective is to assign tasks and responsibilities in such a way that mobility and exchange are obvious characteristics. Consequently the cohesion and the exploitation of the complementarities of the network are maximised.

Although ERs and ESRs will participate in the same training program, the training focus for ER and ESR will be different. Acquiring basic research skills will be at the heart of the ESR programme and is characterized by a high coaching intensity. With growing research experience, an increased capacity to have a broadening range of responsibilities should be accomplished. The ER training programme should ensure that the trainee has the basic skills to formulate research targets, to transfer knowledge, to obtain funding for a research project and to manage the project for a small team.

The tasks have been distributed over the academic members to spread the workload fairly. The ESRs and ERs will operate in a collaborative team. Temporary staff (postdoctoral and pre-doctoral researchers) will be working in similar areas, thus allowing sharing of workloads and enabling mutual transfer of knowledge. In addition, students and support staff will be assigned to the young researcher for performing the task.
